Vernaccia is a synthesis of a close and harmonious relationship between the people of San Gimignano and their land.
A bond rooted in childhood, Sara, ever since she was a child, saw daily and family lunches accompanied by the prized white wine, Vernaccia.
Coordinator of the Vernaccia di San Gimignano wine consortium., she has always breathed wine culture and tells about her passion and profession in the beautiful setting of the Rocca di Montestaffoli. San Gimignano's highest and most panoramic point, the fortress is home to La Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Experience, a center for tasting, enhancement and promotion of the White Queen.
White in a land as famous for red wines as Tuscany, Vernaccia is a wine defined as unique, noble and rebellious. "Unique because of history, noble because it was appreciated by kings and popes, rebellious because it is the wine you don't expect."
The only wine to be mentioned by Dante in Canto XIV of Purgatory, it has a centuries-old history dating back to the Middle Ages. In 1966 it was the first to obtain DOC recognition in Italy, and since 1993, thanks in part to the efforts of the consortium, it can boast the DOCG quality mark. In fact, Vernaccia must be produced as per specifications only in the San Gimignano territory and "one cannot speak of Vernaccia without speaking of San Gimignano." There is a deeply rooted bond between the territory and the community; many wineries are run by families who for generations have honored the relationship with the land and hand down secrets and traditions. The consortium in turn enlarges the family, is a point of reference where producers can find the support and welcome of a home.
