Fortress of Montestaffoli

A new life, an ancient fortress

An ancient center of protection for the city and nucleus of San Gimignano, the Rocca di Montestaffoli is an ideal stop to breathe in the history that creeps through the stone that once belonged to the area's historic city walls. Built in the 14th century and once owned by the Bishop of Volterra, the fortress was the center of a thriving economy and an ancient settlement. Moreover, the fortress was located at the point where the section of the first walls built to protect the city began; a place chosen because of its strategic location at the crossroads of the main roads of the time. Following a plague epidemic, a famine and the constant infighting that devastated the town, the people of San Gimignano offered the fortress to Florence in exchange for military protection; thus in 1353 the Florentines built the fortress we see today. Having fallen into disrepair during the years of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the fortress was restored in the 20th century, and at present, of the original structure, only the outer walls and a square tower remain, in which it is possible to enjoy a wonderful view. Thanks to the Municipality of San Gimignano, the fortress now lives a new life. Events, art exhibitions, concerts and more are organized in the Rocca's park to experience the city's entertainment surrounded by antiquity.

City of the world, heritage of humanity. Where to breathe in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages and immerse yourself in the magnificent Tuscan countryside under the banner of a beautiful and sustainable lifestyle.
