Museum of Sacred Art

The timeless art history of San Gimignano

The former Chaplains' dormitory houses the historic Museum of Sacred Art, which displays multiple celebrated works of art that tell the story of the city's spiritual identity. The museum was created by collecting works from the collection owned by the Collegiate Church, convents and churches in the surrounding area. The museum includes sculptures, canvases, terracottas, silverware, liturgical furnishings and more made in the period between the 13th and 19th centuries. The museum itinerary includes eight rooms spread over two floors, and during the visit one encounters works such as the large altarpiece by Fra Paolino da Pistoia, a famous Tuscan painter, depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints. Wooden sculptures dating from the 16th century include St. Gabriel the Archangel Announcing and the Virgin Annunciate, of which only the bust remains, and the one depicting St. Anthony Abbot made by Francesco da Valdambrino in the early 15th century. Among the paintings worth mentioning, the museum also exhibits Bartolo di Fredi's panel painting depicting the Madonna of the Rose, a fragment of a triptych from the parish church of San Biagio in Cusona, and the Crucifix with Saints, the ancient fresco by the painter Benozzo Gozzoli. Inside the hall of sacred furnishings, one can admire multiple examples of goldsmithing, including a precious enameled cross dating back to the early 16th century. Finally, in the hall of vestments, among numerous liturgical vestments from the 17th and 18th centuries, the Paliotto of the Golden Doves, a rare piece of 15th-century textile art, is preserved.

City of the world, heritage of humanity. Where to breathe in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages and immerse yourself in the magnificent Tuscan countryside under the banner of a beautiful and sustainable lifestyle.
