Torre Grossa
Imposing and majestic, Torre Grossa, as its name suggests, is the tallest tower in all of San Gimignano and stands in the heart of the city, in Piazza del Duomo, next to the Palazzo Nuovo del Podestà. Fifty-four meters high, its history begins on August 21, 1300, when the town hosted, as ambassador of the city of Florence, the "Supreme Poet," Dante Alighieri. The tower was completed eleven years later and to this day it is one of the best preserved towers in the medieval city, despite the various vicissitudes it has undergone throughout its history. In fact, in 1632, Torre Grossa was severely damaged by lightning causing the partial collapse of part of the facade and whose damage is still visible today. After its reconstruction seventeen years later, the tower suffered further injuries given by bombing during World War II.
It is characterized by a square base and a stone facing, like most of the towers present in San Gimignano. Unique and different from the others, the tower offers the possibility to be able to visit the interior of this important historical jewel and especially to climb and enjoy from its top a breathtaking view of the historic center and the beautiful Tuscan landscape.
